Psalm 55:22 Cast your burdens on the Lord…

When I last wrote, my boys were heading to an orphanage in Colombia, South America.  Thanks to everyone who prayed for their safe returns and success of their mission.  They have returned safely and with a new perspective on the difference between “good stuff” and “important stuff”.  They are back spending time with friends, playing baseball, and fishing as often as possible – all good things.  However, they realize none of these are as important as serving others, sharing the saving Grace of Jesus Christ, or growing in their Faith.

As Christians we are called to a life of faith, not a life of understanding and reason.  It is a misconception to think that if we have faith, God will lead us to success in this world and we will have one glorious experience after another.  Indeed, the biggest test of our Faith often occurs when Christ’s plan differs from our own.  It is during these times that we must draw near to God and listen for his voice.  On January 1, as I was just starting to make Trinity Ob/Gyn a reality to better serve my patients, I was greeted by these words from Oswald Chambers in the devotion book I had just started… “But before we choose to follow God’s will, a crisis must develop in our lives.  This happens because we tend to be unresponsive to God’s gentler nudges.  He brings us to the place where He asks us to be our utmost for Him and we begin to debate.  He then providentially produces a crisis where we have to decide – for or against.  That moment becomes a great crossroads in our lives.  If a crisis has come to you on any front, surrender your will to Jesus absolutely and irrevocably.”

From that moment, my family and I have tried to devote ourselves and my practice to Him.  We cast all our worry on the Lord.  God continues to speak to us through friends, family, older physicians, and most importantly, our patients.  I spoke with a wonderful lady recently about an illness that had inflicted one of her children.  She has an unwavering commitment to Jesus Christ and is fully aware that He is bigger than all her problems.  While I did my best to listen to her and bring her comfort, I found myself in awe of her and inspired by her Faith.

Today God spoke to me through the words of Pastor Jim Collier at First Baptist Church – Concord.  He reminded me that the Bible is full of ordinary people doing extraordinary things through Faith in God.  He added that obedience is faith in action and when we don’t obey, there is a good chance we will miss God’s blessings.  I encourage you to listen to Pastor Collier’s entire message “When God Moves” that can be found at FBC Concord, Youtube.  Let me also encourage you to read Hebrews Chapter 11 and realize nothing is impossible for God.
