On a recent Sunday morning I had been debating how I might give something back to Jesus Christ for all he has done for me. Since January 1, 2018, I had been totally committed to my new medical practice and the physical work and mental strain at times had seemed overwhelming. I have made it this far due to a dedicated wife, strong family support, and the prayers of numerous friends. I thought about placing a Bible verse on my website but was fearful of alienating someone who might need medical assistance.
That Sunday morning, at First Baptist Church of Concord, Pastor Jim Collier posed a simple question. He asked “How are you different today than you were the day before you accepted Jesus?”. It made me realize that as a Christian, the world should not only see a difference in us, but we should make a difference. Believe it or not, I still wasn’t convinced. On the way home from church, I asked my family what they thought about the idea of me placing a spiritual message on my website. “Should I do it?” I asked. One of my sons simply responded “Dad- why wouldn’t you do that?”
I admit that remark stung a little. I didn’t have a good answer and so At the Cross was added as a section to our website. As I began to place words on paper tonight, doubt again entered by mind. This time I was greeted by words from Oswald Chambers, the author of my current daily devotional book My Utmost For His Highest. He was speaking of Paul’s total dedication to the Gospel and says “The lasting characteristic of a spiritual man is the ability to understand correctly the meaning of the Lord Jesus Christ in his life, and the ability to explain the purposes of God to others”. I don’t know if I’ve achieved this level yet, but I know enough to realize if the effort adds even one soul to Christ’s Kingdom, it was time well spent.
